Terrorismo islámico en Jordania

Atentado contra diplomáticos israelíes en Jordania, no hay muertos.

Ojo que le va a salir cara a los jordanos la filtración de sus trabajos a primer nivel con los americanos y otros servicios "infieles".

An explosive device was detonated against a two-car convoy of Israeli diplomats in Jordan yesterday afternoon at about 5 P.M. No injuries were reported.

The explosion occurred as the diplomats, traveling in armored vehicles, were passing the town of Na'ur, about 20 kilometers from the Allenby Bridge, which they were planning to cross for a weekend in Israel. Jordanian authorities have begun investigating the attack. Advertisement

Traveling in the vehicles were two diplomats, two security officers and two Jordanians. Israel's ambassador to Jordan, Daniel Nevo, was not in either of the vehicles at the time.

The bomb was placed on a main highway linking the capital, Amman, with the area of the Allenby Bridge. The road is considered a secure highway, and there are Jordanian patrols and roadblocks throughout the day and night. The two vehicles sustained moderate damage, while the passengers suffered no injuries.

Immediately after the incident, the diplomats and their security detail drove to a nearby Jordanian military base, and following a short debriefing by Jordanian intelligence officers, the Israelis were taken to the Allenby Bridge.

Jordan's ambassador to Israel, Dr. Ali al-Ayed, told Haaretz that he had no information on the investigation.

During the initial hours following the incident no information on the attack was released in Jordan, but by 8 P.M. Jordan's information minister issued an announcement on the attack and its location. According to the statement, a bomb exploded near passing cars, including two that belong to Israeli diplomats.

Jordan's foreign minister, Nasser Judah, called Israel's ambassador to Jordan last night, and asked about the well-being of the Israeli diplomats who had come under attack. The Jordanian minister said that the country's security services are investigating the incident and aim to apprehend the perpetrators as soon as possible.

Diplomats at the Israeli embassy in Jordan are under heavy security, and their movements in the country are limited and always involve a mixed security detail of Israeli and Jordanian security personnel. Jordanian security forces are also situated in close proximity to the embassy and the residence of the Israeli mission in Amman.

Diplomats serving in Jordan normally are in the country during the week without their families. On Thursday afternoons most Israeli diplomats depart for the weekend in Israel, leaving behind a duty officer.

High security standards

All Israeli embassies abroad are highly secured in a combined effort of local authorities and the Shin Bet security service. Both embassies and ambassadors have in the past been targeted by terrorists. In many world capitals the road leading to the Israeli embassy is blocked to traffic, and the ambassador travels in an armored vehicle with bodyguards.

This is all the more so in embassies situated in Arab countries. In Cairo the embassy is in the Mahdi quarter, in a multi-storey building which can only be reached through a number of police roadblocks, while inside one undergoes security checks in isolated, blast-proof rooms. The embassy in Jordan is situated in a suburb of Amman, within a highly secured compound.

According to Tuvia Livneh, former head of security at the Shin Bet, securing an Israeli embassy in an Arab country is far more complicated than in other countries because of "the ability of your rivals to operate with greater freedom. It is easy for them to mix with the local populace, and that makes intelligence collection easier. One of the main elements prior to an attack like yesterday's is intelligence gathering on the routine lives of the embassy staff."
