SPECIAL FORCES IN HUNT FOR LAST OF THE GADDAFI CLAN

Sunday October 23,2011
By Marco Giannangeli

BRITISH Special Forces are now hunting for Muammar Gaddafi’s eldest son, Saif al-Islam.

A small Anglo-French unit was on the trail of the fallen dictator, until his death on Thursday at the hands of a violent mob.

The team, thought to include elements of the Special Reconnaissance Regiment and France’s elite DGSE intelligence agents, were told to switch their target and focus on his heir apparent.

Reports suggest Saif al-Islam, who is already wanted for war crimes, may have been injured in an RAF Tornado strike, though this has not been confirmed. He is thought to be making his way to Niger.

Last night it was reported that a post-mortem had been carried out on his father in Misrata.

His body was due to be handed over to relatives for burial, though details of the funeral have yet to be finalised.

Gaddafi’s four other children, three sons and a daughter, are scattered in exile in neighbouring Algeria and Niger.

Saif al-Islam gained notoriety after his transformation from a friend of the West to staunch defender of his father’s fallen dynasty, vowing to die in Libya.

The London School of Economics graduate even led the International Criminal Court on cat and mouse games while his country burned.

After reports in August that he had been arrested and was en route to The Hague, he appeared before a Tripoli hotel packed with foreign journalists, saying: “I am here to disperse the rumours.”

A source told the Sunday Express: “A team of around eight men from British and French special forces had been tracking Gaddafi right up to the point where his convoy was attacked and he was subsequently killed.

“It was immediately turned round to track down his son, Saif al-Islam.” As the hunt for Saif continued, thousands of protestors swamped streets in Syria and Yemen, bolstered by the news of the Libyan dictator’s death. On Friday President Bashar Assad’s security forces opened fire on protesters, killing 24 people, according to activists.

It did not stop crowds chanting, “Your turn is coming, Bashar.” In Yemen crowds told President Ali Abdullah Saleh, “Gaddafi is gone and you’re next, oh butcher”.

Gaddafi’s end followed the overthrow of Tunisia’s Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who has been driven into exile, and Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak, who is in jail.
