Tengo una amiga en Pakistán y me cuenta cosas tremebundas para luego preguntarme "¿se habla de ello en la prensa occidental?" Y yo ni puta idea. Sospecha que la van a mandar a Afganistán. Menuda fuente de primera mano voy a tener.

Pues sí, al menos 3 de los que hay ahí son españoles, los dos de la izquierda con el mono de vuelo de color arena muy posiblemente, y puede que hasta el de azul, con lo que cabe preguntarse... ¿ha alquilado el MinisDef a una compañía privada para que proporcione formación de vuelo en los Mi17 a personal nuestro, y que estos instruyan a los afganos? ¿se encargará Vertical de Aviación del OMLT de helicópteros al que nos comprometimos y por tanto es una operación 100% externalizada?

Sería la opción lógica, la otra sería elevar costes y con un rendimiento bajo para nosotros, tener a unos pilotos formados en un aparato que no vamos a utilizar. Espero que hayan externalizado el OMLT al 100%

The Tax Court yesterday held that a Florida man who earned $98,400 in 2005 working for Blackwater (since renamed Xe) providing security services to the U.S. Army in Iraq could not exclude the compensation from income under § 112 as “combat zone compensation of members of the Armed Forces.” Holmes v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2011-26 (Jan. 31, 2011). The Tax Court concluded that the taxpayer did not serve in the Armed Forces of the United States but instead was a private citizen hired by and paid by a private company (Blackwater). The Tax Court refused to impose a penalty because the taxpayer relied on an IRS memorandum wrongly stating that civilian personnel in direct support of combat zone military operations qualified for the § 112 exclusion.

El "inglés judicial" no lo domino, pero me parece entender que el contratista (un IC, Independent Contractor, como el 99% de la gente de Blackwater en 2005) se ha librado gracias a que la norma del IRS (Hacienda en versión yanqui) a la que se acogió estaba mal redactada.

Independent Contractor, Intermitent Employee o Employee... pa'gustos los colores, pero si uno tiene control sobre lo que gasta, no hay nada mejor que ser IC.

Así es Loopster. Se ha librado por los pelos, ya que decian que el personal que apoyase al ejército se amparaba a dicha norma del IRS.
Por lo que el Tribunal Fiscal no le ha puesto ninguna pena.

Se pone la cosa jodida para Raymond Davis... le van a tener otros ocho días retenido, y aparece esto:

WASHINGTON: While Washington and much of the world continues to be transfixed by the drama over democracy in Egypt, an ugly sideshow involving spooks and spying in Pakistan is consuming the Obama administration, redrawing the security contours with regards to what was once regarded as a stalwart ally.

The Raymond Davis affair, as the episode has come to be known, has become not just curiouser, but also messier. The alleged private security contractor, who was on the rolls of the US diplomatic mission in Pakistan when he shot dead two Pakistanis in what he said was in self-defense after they attempted to rob him, is still incarcerated despite US demands that he be freed because he enjoys diplomatic immunity.

But it turns out that even as Islamabad is publicly resisting American pressure, a section of the Pakistani establishment has revealed that the two men who were shot were in fact agents of the ISI.

Meanwhile, Shumaila Kanwal, the wife of one of alleged robbers/spies died under mysterious circumstances in a Pakistani hospital after consuming poison, but not before she met journalists and issued a revenge call, demanding "blood for blood."

Pakistani officials told the Express Tribune in Lahore that the Pakistani government's "tough stance" on the whole issue was also a "reaction to the attempts by certain elements in Washington to implicate...the ISI in the November 2008 Mumbai attacks," including the decision by a US court to summon top ISI officials in connections with the attacks.

The incredible drama has greatly soured ties between US and Pakistan, with the growing feeling in Washington that its once-famed ally is now turning rogue. There is now a demand in some quarters in Washington to turn off the aid spigot vital for Pakistan's survival, even as there is pressure on the government in Islamabad to hold to account the US whose lifeline to its troops in Afghanistan runs through Pakistan.
